KEN RICE

ken rice photo Come join us for an evening with Ken Rice, Tuesday, May 4 7-8:45 pm. A national award-winning journalist, Ken co-anchors the weeknight editions of KDKA-TV News at Five and Eleven and the KDKA Ten O'Clock News on Pittsburgh's CW.

He is one of the few local journalists ever to report live on the CBS Evening News -- in the tense hours following a shooting spree in Pittsburgh's suburbs in 2000. As a member of the KDKA Investigators in 1996, Ken exposed the city of Pittsburgh's recycling program as a sham -- revealing how "recyclables" were simply being dumped in a landfill. His reporting led directly to the firing and prosecution of the city's recycling contractor.

Ken has been honored with local, state and national journalism awards, including a national first place Associated Press award for an investigation called Harrisburg Paydirt – which exposed Pennsylvania legislators' lucrative, taxpayer-funded perks. Ken developed and taught a television news reporting course at Point Park University and is frequently called upon to speak at local schools and community organizations.

He serves on the board of the Allegheny District Chapter of the Multiple Sclerosis Society and is Honorary Chair of Pittsburgh's annual MS Walk. Ken also chairs the advisory board of the volunteer service organization Pittsburgh Cares, and serves on the advisory board of the Greater Pittsburgh Literacy Council. He is a past board member of the Southwestern PA chapter of The American Red Cross, and has worked on charitable endeavors with many organizations including Share our Strength, the Western Pennsylvania Chapter of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America, and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. In 2007, the Food Bank honored Ken's contributions with its Hunger Awareness Day Award.

Don't miss this opportunity to learn more about the news process here in Pittsburgh.

Book Talk by Mt. Lebanon Library Young Adult Librarian, Laurie Schultz -Pirates by Cilea Rees

This book has an exciting plot and a reeling pace with accuracy to historical detail and realism in the portrayal of seafaring life and the injustice of slavery.  This book was a YALSA Best Book for Young Adults in 2004 and is also an excellent audio selection.   I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I did! Click Book Talk for more detail.

LIBRARY TIPS
Specific tips on how to get the most out of your library.

Book Clubs Take Notice!

bookMore advice to Book Clubs.

If your book group plans on using county library copies, make sure that your selected title is NOT: 1) a book with TOO MANY reserves on it (they will not arrive in time) or 2) a book with TOO FEW copies for your book group. These are common frustrations for book club members. Check out our book and literature database: Books and Literature

Includes:

  • Biography Reference Bank - full text biographical articles
  • Bookflix - pairs classic video storybooks with nonfiction eBooks from Scholastic
  • Literature Resource Center - author information, literary criticism and plot summaries *
  • NoveList - fiction database to read reviews & annotations, get discussion guides and more *
  • NoveList K-8 - features articles, booktalks, book discussion guides, and author read-alikes
  • Play Index - find citations to some 31,000 plays published individually or in collections from 1949 to the present
  • Poetry Criticism Database - critical essays and biographical information

* Especially good sources for book groups.

*Does your book group have a book they thought was outstanding and would like to recommend to the community? Share your book club book review with the us by contacting newsletter_editor@mtlebanonlibrary.org and reviews will be posted each month in this newsletter. Let us know if we can share your book group name.
