LIBRARY TIPS
Specific tips on how to get the most out of your library

Children's Library Tip:
Does your child love trucks?  Does she long to fly in a plane?  Does the sight of a backhoe send him wild?  Does the mere mention of trains elicit oohs and aahs? Then the place to look for great books when you’re in the children’s library is the red bookcase beside our fire truck. This is where all the picture books about Things That Go live. In addition, you can also find books about transportation in our non-fiction section under the call numbers j 623 – 629. In the children’s library, you can always find a book to take you new places—and tell you how to get there, too!

The Bonsai
is a living art form with its origins in China over 1500 years ago, is simply the dwarfing and training of trees for aesthetic and/or spiritual benefit.  The Japanese development of the unique art form demonstrates their idea of tidying nature as opposed to Western desire for balance and creative man-made control of nature.  By revealing nature in miniature, the imperfections, variations and effects of time become more apparent from what you sometimes see on full-size trees. By observing the bonsai we get a fuller appreciation of the world around us. The Pittsburgh Bonsai Society was one of the first in the United States.
Come to the workshop and get a brief introduction to the art of bonsai and try your green thumbs at potting and trimming your own starter bonsai.  Register now: Teens workshop scheduled for April 24, 3:15- 5:00 p.m. and the Adults workshop is April 25, 10:00 – 12:00.

April 25 - Arbor Day
Mt. Lebanon is designated a "Tree City".

More Interesting Events This Month

One Book One Comunity

The fun begins this month with a number of book discussions and events taking place throughout the county.

The 2008 selection for Allegheny County is:
I'm Proud of You: My Friendship with Fred Rogers
by journalist Tim Madigan

A memoir chronicling Madigan’s friendship with the late Fred Rogers

Back in 1998, the Washington Center for the Book at the Seattle Public Library launched Seattle Reads, the country’s first community-wide reading program. The idea of a large community of people reading the same book at the same time really caught on. Now all 50 states have some sort of One Book program in place to promote reading, foster literacy and encourage meaningful discussion and tolerance.

Pittsburgh has been part of the trend since 2003 when The Allegheny County Library Association (ACLA) kicked off its own One Book One Community campaign. The selection this year features Mr. Rogers, who was treasured as a national icon for his work on the Mister Rogers' Neighborhood PBS television program, is, of course, especially beloved here in his hometown of Pittsburgh. In additon, this latest book pick marks a year of celebration that includes what would have been Rogers' 80th birthday and the 250th birthday of the Steel City.

Ken Davis is Coming

National Poetry Month has been celebrated in April every year since 1996 when the Academy of American Poets convened a group of publishers, booksellers, librarians, literary organizations, poets, and teachers to promote the reading, listening, and appreciation of poetry. Mt. Lebanon Public Library always features the “Poem of the Day" and displays of poetry books.  This year there will be a reading and discussion by two local poets who are featured in the book Along These Rivers: Poetry and Photography from Pittsburgh. Come and enjoy this program on Saturday, April 19th at 2:00 PM in the Children’s Story Hour Room.

Language Group Highlights
A more in-depth focus on each of our language groups one month at a time

Morning Spanish Literature & Conversation Group

The Spanish Conversation and Reading Group was formed in the late 1980's. The conversation program evolved adding a reading portion to the program after Urania Leib, the leader, brought in newspaper articles, short stories and poems. Later the group decided to read entire books. Over the years they have read in Spanish from countries such as Spain, Mexico, Argentina, the U.S. and Chile. They begin every meeting with a free discussion of current events, politics, movies, family activities and other topics people choose to introduce. Then they read aloud from their current book and talk about the story, new words, cultural concepts and whether they like or don't like the book. Members have various levels of fluency, but all have studied some Spanish in the past. Participation adds to the understanding and enjoyment of the group. New members are invited and welcome. The new book is Malinche by Laura Esquivel. Try this recipe provided by the group giving us a taste of their culture.
